How to Fit Coving

How to Fit Coving

Coving is a decorative feature that conceals the edge between a wall and ceiling, to give a room a finished look. Coving comes in various sizes and designs to suit any type of décor. For a professional result with any coving, follow our simple step-by-step guide.

Step 1

Protect the Floor

Protect your flooring by laying a plastic sheet or tarpaulin. You should also protect your hands for this task with protective gloves.

Step 2

Mark Position

Hold a 6 inch piece of coving into position and mark the top and bottom with a pencil.

Step 3

Hammer in First Panel Pin

Hammer a panel pin into the wall at the bottom mark.

Step 4

Chalk Line

Stretch a chalk line between this panel pin and the bottom of the coving you are butting against or at the other end of the wall. Pull the chalk line out from the wall and let it snap back, this will leave a mark across the wall.

Step 5

Hammer in Panel Pins

Hammer in panel pins every 18 inches along your bottom marked line. Offer your cut section of coving into place to ensure a proper fit.

Step 6

Apply Coving Adhesive

Apply coving adhesive to the back of the coving along the edges. It is not necessary to apply adhesive to the centre as it will not come in contact with any surface.

Step 7

Fit Coving

Lift your adhesive covered coving on to the top of your line of panel pins and push firmly. Hammer panel pins into the ceiling at the top edge of the coving to hold the coving in place as the adhesive sets.

Step 8

Tidy Edges

Remove the excess adhesive from the edge of the coving with a palette knife and a damp cloth.

Step 9

Apply Filler

Apply a thick bead of flexible filler to the top and bottom edges of the coving.

Step 10

Smooth Filler

Using a damp sponge, smooth the filler to leave a clean edge.

Step 11

Sand Filler

After the filler is dry, sand until completely smooth.
