How to Paint a Wooden Shed

How to Paint a Wooden Shed

A wooden shed that is properly cared for adds character to a garden. Freshly painted in trendy colours, it can be both stylish and functional. Follow our simple step-by-step guide for an efficient and professional paint job.

Step 1

Remove Debris from Shed Surface

Use a wire brush to scrub off any dirt and debris stuck to the shed’s outer surface. Alternatively, you can use a power hose for this purpose, but you will need to allow the shed surface sufficient time to dry.

Step 2

Cover Up Exterior Features

Use masking tape to cover any exterior features and fixings of the shed that you don’t want to be splattered with paint, e.g. windows, hinges and handles.

Step 3

Protect the Ground

If required, lay down a protective ground covering such as a dust sheet or tarpaulin. This will protect the ground and garden surrounding the shed from any stray paint.

Step 4

Apply Paint

Choose a paint or stain suitable for exterior wood, preferably one that will weatherproof your timber shed. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions for the product before using it. Working in sections, apply your chosen colour, starting from the top and finishing at the base of each section.

Step 5

Finishing Touches

Paint trims, doors and window frames in a contrast colour for a clean and vibrant look.
